Indexable Milling

KYOCERA introduces the ME90, an indexable helical end mill developed to bring stability and long tool life to titanium alloys and other difficult-to-cut materials.

Titanium pushes every part of a milling setup to its limit. Vibration runs high, heat concentrates at the cutting edge, edge loading causes chipping, and serrated chips create shifting cutting forces that make the process unpredictable. The ME90 tackles these challenges with a complete system: a new high-rigidity holder, a unique insert geometry, and KYOCERA’s new PM335S grade working together at the spindle.

The redesigned high-rigidity holder suppresses deflection, keeping the cut stable through long engagements and deep helical passes. The inserts feature a special arc land edge shape that reduces temperature and stress at the cutting edge, improving resistance to both wear and chipping. In internal testing, the ME90 delivered up to 1.5x the tool life of competitor tools.

The ME90 runs inserts in PM335S, a new grade that pairs a high-toughness carbide substrate with a high-toughness nano multi-layer coating. It balances fracture resistance and wear resistance, extending tool life in titanium and superalloys by up to 2x in select operations. Double-sided peripheral inserts with 8 cutting edges keep cost per edge low, so shops get longer runs, fewer insert changes, and more economical titanium milling.
